Breathlessness is a common symptom for patients with advanced lung disease. For 65 year-old Mdm Hoe Sau Fong, she used to have slight breathlessness due to asthma, but it worsened significantly in the recent years and the doctor diagnosed her with severe lung disease in June 2023.
Mdm Hoe came under the care of Assisi Hospice Day Care in October 2023. She joined our STEP progamme, which assists and supports patients with chronic progressive respiratory disease in their management of symptoms and optimisation of function, empowering them with self-management strategies.
Over 170 volunteers, healthcare professionals, allied health professionals, social workers, counsellors and members of communities supporting families of patients at end-of-life had an enriching and memorable learning experience at Assisi Hospice during the 4-day Volunteer & Care Symposium, held from 22 to 25 Mar 2024. Hospice physician and end-of-life doula Dr Aditi Sethi from the United States shared about various community-supported models around the world, and conducted two interactive experiential workshops – “Being Present for Those at End-of-Life” and “The Person Behind the Patients – How to Support a Dying Experience that Honours the Unique Individual”. Our Assisi colleagues shared on the No One Dies Alone (NODA) programme, Culture & Religion in Palliative Care and Bereavement Support in Palliative Care.
Over 10,000 friends joined us at Assisi Fun Day 2024, held on 9 Jun 2024 at St Joseph’s Institution International. All the fun was only possible because of the generosity of our corporate sponsors, volunteers and community groups who came forward and contributed delicious food and merchandise, and gave their time and talents. Co-organised with City Developments Limited (CDL), Assisi Fun Day is our biggest fundraising event of the year, and all proceeds from the event will go towards the care of Assisi Hospice’s patients and their families.
Our patients and caregivers travelled around the world at International Day 2024 @ Assisi, which was held on 18 Apr 2024 at Assisi Hospice Courtyard! They enjoyed exotic food bites, traditional games and activities, and authentic local performances from nine countries – Argentina, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Indonesia, Lithuania, Panama, Spain, and Turkiye. Friends from Spouses of Head of Mission Group, led by spouses of the respective ambassadors from the nine countries, shared the fun, beauty and delicacies of their culture with our patients and caregivers.
